Description

A purpose-made scrap-book with a coloured, diagonal stripe design on the cover and a banner heading, "Cuttings". The book contains mainly press-cuttings with some illustrations and material from other printed sources, all relating to the history, features and contents of the Cathedral and to people associated with it. Contents and principal topics referred to include: the ordination of women (Dec 1988); the twelfth Lambeth Conference (1988); vehicular access to the Close (Feb 1989); "The long climb back to glory" - the threat to the Cathedral and Spire posed by acid rain, the beginning of the restoration work, and the Spire appeal (Jan 1989); Cathedral Choir tour of the USA (Apr & May 1989); the re-opening of Malmesbury House to the public (Mar 1989); a fire at Chilmark Vicarage, in which three daughters of Rev Malcolm Acheson died, and reports of their funeral (Mar 89); "Faces behind restoration" - an article about the people working on the restoration of the Spire (Mar 1989); the fall in the number of visitors to the Cathedral following the banning of coaches from the Close (Apr 1989); Christine Farrington, the Cathedral's first female deacon (Apr 1989); the consecration of Peter Vaughan as Bishop of Ramsbury (May 1989); "A Maze Insight", an all-night event in the Cathedral (Jun 1989); HRH Princess Margaret attending a concert in aid of the Spire Appeal (May 1989).
