Description

A purpose-made scrap-book with a coloured, diagonal stripe design on the cover and a banner heading, "Cuttings". The book contains press-cuttings relating to the history, features and contents of the Cathedral and to people and events associated with it; the coverage is more detailed and from a more narrow time-period than in other scrap-books. The main topics covered include: controversy about the building of new toilet facilities between the South Transept and Chapter House, in which Lord St John of Fawsley, Chairman of the Royal Fine Art Commission, spoke of "a running battle to preserve Salisbury Cathedral against the depredations of its dean and chapter" (Sep-Nov 1989); related articles by Hugh Dickinson, Dean of Salisbury (Sep 1989) and Lord St John of Fawsley (Oct 1989); "Gala Concert" conducted by former Prime Minister Edward Heath in aid of the Spire Appeal (Jun 1989), and an article about Edward Heath living at Arundells (Sep 1989); "topping out" of the scaffolding around the Spire (Sep 1989); celebration of the Quincentenary of the birth of Thomas Cranmer, with 800 choristers from Salisbury Diocese (Aug 1989); production of Britten's "Noye's Fludde" in the Cathedral, conducted by Richard Hickox (Sep 1989); Salisbury Festival (1989); articles by Bishop John Baker; Bishop John Baker and Archdeacon John Smith taking a flight around the Diocese of Salisbury from RAF Lyneham in a Hercules Mark I aircraft (Nov 1989); publication of The Wiltshire County facsimile edition of the Domesday Book, a copy of which was presented to the Cathedral Library (Jan 1990); Bishop John Baker becoming the first diocesan bishop to enroll as a full member of the Mothers' Union (Dec 1989); storms in early 1990, which damaged stone pinnacles and a stained glass window, caused the Cathedral to be closed to vistors and the cancellation of evensong, and uprooted a 200-year-old cedar in the Close (Feb-Mar 1990); photograph of Suzanne Eward, Librarian and Keeper of the Muniments, with BBC broadcaster John Dunne, who presented a radio programme about the Cathedral and its staff (Feb 1990); celebration of Edward Heath's 40 years as an MP (Feb 1990); appointment of James Thomas as a consultant to draw up a management plan for the Close (Mar-Apr 1990); centenary celebrations for Bishop Wordsworth's School (1990); tributes to David Horlock, artistic director of the Salisbury Playhouse, following his death in a road acident (Mar 1990); obituaries of and tributes to George Raindorp (1911-1990), Bishop of Salisbury 1973-1981 (Apr 1990); plans for a girls' choir in the Cathedral (May 1990); and the Creation Festival in the Close, including a half scale version of Stonehenge made form 74 tons of straw (May 1990).
