One of a series of six clothbound purpose-made scrap-books with marbled paper covers containing material relating to The Salisbury Cathedral Spire Appeal, 1985-1993. Four of the books have a label on the inside back cover: "Hand Marbled Designed and Produced by Compton Marbling Tisbury, Wiltshire England". The spine of this volume has "VOL. III Jan. '87 . Feb. The Spire Appeal sought to raise £6.5 million to save the spire and tower of Salisbury Cathedral from collapse and to restore the West Front, and was said to be the largest ever appeal of its kind in England. Among many reports of fundraising initiatives, this volume includes reports on: the appeal reaching a total of £1.4 milion by Feb 1987, and £2.0 miilion by Sep 1987; Sir Austin Bale, President of Glaxo, appointed Chairman of the National Appeal Committee of the Spire Trust; an art exhibition at Mompesson House by Marjorie Green, aged 90; a scale model of the Cathedral under construction in about 1280, built by James Mogford, harpsichord maker, and James Ogg, eye surgeon; the three steel "spaceframes" inserted into the spire to take the weight of the masonry, designed by Peter Taylor of engineers Gifford Taylor; an "InSpire" youth event, when more than 1,000 14-25 year-olds spent the night in the Cathedral; a concert organised by entertainer Roy Castle, which included a tap-dancing routine by a local dancing academy; an eight-person parachute drop into the Close; Beating the Retreat by five military bands; the carving of the first new stone, to be inserted into the upper decorative band of the spire; HRH Prince Charles climbing to the uper decorative band, setting a stone carved with the Prince of Wales' feathers and unveiling a commemorative plaque (17 Sep 1987); various embroidery, quilting and other craft fundraising activities; the stonemasons involved in the retoration of the spire; the death in Jan 1988 of former Dean, the Very Rev Dr Sydney Evans CBE, who initiated the Spire Appeal.
