Description
Nine boxes of deeds relating to properties in the Cathedral Close for the period 1220s to 1800s: original reference numbers are Press I boxes 21-27. There is a typed list (copy retained with documents) of the contents of box 21 which contains 41 deeds (inc nos 14a and 14b) dating from the 1200s, 1300s , and early 1400s: the documents are arranged in chronological order. The box 21 list gives the date, a summary and names of the parties involved for each deed. The documents in boxes 22-27 cover the period 1550s to 1800s; detailed information about each deed is recorded on an index card - one card for each document. The documents within boxes 22-27 do not appear to be arranged in any particular order: information given about each document includes; date, summary, and names of the parties involved.
Box 21, document number 33 is a document believed to relate to the medieval clock. It is a lease from the Dean and Chapter to Reginald Glover and his wife, Alice, for a shop built over the Close ditch on the east side of the north gate of the Close and assigned for the maintenance of the clock in the bell-tower. Term: 40 years. Rent: 16s. Seal: red, depicting two hands spread out (gloves?). (Transcription available and kept with document).
