Description
This document is clearly titled "Grant with Mandamus" in what appears to be contemporaneous handwriting, but it seems to be just the Grant, of property as detailed below; the Mandamus is a separate document (PI/1/4/2).
Grant of Rev Robert Bickersteth (1816-1884), Rector of St Giles-in-the-Fields, London, and Prebendary of Torleton, by which Queen Victoria has "given granted and conferred" on him "that Canonical House situate within the Close of the Canons of Sarum commonly called Ledynhull [Leadenhall]" for the term of his natural life.
The Leadenhall became vacant following the consecration as Bishop of Salisbury on 14 May 1854 of Walter Kerr Hamilton, who had occupied it as a resident Canon.
It is not known how or why the house fell to be granted by the Queen, but the grant is given under her Great Seal.
The document is endorsed " We the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for England . . . do hereby certify that the net yearly value of the Canonry in the Cathedral Church of Salisbury is five hundred pounds."
