Description
Grant to the Hon and Rev Samuel Waldegrave (1817-1869), Prebendary of Calne, by which Queen Victoria has "given granted and conferred" on him "that Canonical House situate within the Close of the Canons of Sarum commonly called Ledynhull [Leadenhall]" for the term of his life.
The Leadenhall became vacant following the promotion of Rev Robert Bickersteth to be Bishop of Ripon (see the Grant to Rev Robert Bickersteth, PI/1/4/1). (Rev Samuel Waldegrave was to be promoted to be Bishop of Carlisle in 1860).
It is not known how or why the house fell to be granted by the Queen, but the grant is given under her Great Seal.
The document is endorsed " We the Ecclesiastical Commissioners for England . . . do hereby certify that the net yearly value of A Canonry Residentiary in the Cathedral of Salisbury is Five Hundred Pounds." The endorsement is dated 12 March 1857, a day earlier than the date of the Grant.
