Description
Attested copy of a lease or indenture between the Dean and Chapter of the one part and Thomas Atkinson of New Sarum, Builder, of the other part.
The lease relates to "the Tenement or Mansion House with the Appurtenances Close of Pasture and one other Tenement . . . formerly granted by the then Dean and Chapter unto William Beach late of Keeville" - otherwise known as The King's House, 65 The Close - together with a number of other adjoining premises, which seem to include what are now 63, 64, 66, 67 and 68a The Close.
The lease is referred to in Salisbury: The Houses of the Close (Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, London, 1993, p.216) as part of scheme to demolish the King's House and other properties and build a street of "residences for genteel families", thirty houses in all, which was not preceeded with. An advertisement in the Salisbury Journal of 17 October 1791 had said that "so large a spot of ground in such a situation is not often to be purchased".
