Description
Indenture or lease for 40 years between the Procurator and Commonality of Vicars of the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Sarum of the one part and Frances Salisbury of the Close New Sarum, widow, of the other part.
The subject property is described as the messuage or tenement, backside, stable and garden together with the brick wall on the west and south parts of the said garden, and also all that small piece of ground formerly belonging to the Common Hall of the said vicars containing eight feet in length and three feet four inches in breadth now in the [possession] of Henry Finley as tenant of the said Frances Salisbury.
Salisbury: The Houses of the Close (Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England, London, 1993, p.88) identifies 12 and 13 The Close as originally the Vicars' Hall. While the identification of the property which is the subject of this lease is conjectural, it was evidently adjacent to, or perhaps part of, the Vicars' Hall. Salisbury: The Houses of the Close (p.102) identifies Frances Salisbury as the sometime sub-lessee of Malmesbury House, to the north of the Vicars' Hall.
