Description
Undated letter to "The Reverend Canon Gilbert" from George Button. Robert Gilbert held the prebend of Alton Australis (or Alton Pancras) from 1749 until 1753; since the letter is about identifying the prebendal house, it likely dates from the period of his tenure.
"When you was the last time with me upon discourse which House did belong to the Prebend of Alton Pancras I then said that the Dwelling House on the south side of the Church was the House. But soon after thinking more seriously upon it, I find that I was in the wrong. am now satisfied that it is the House that is situated on the North side".
A small area of text missing where the seal has been torn open.
In pencil on the verso, a list of five sums of money with a total, all barely legible.
