Description

Letter addressed from "Blandford 11 July 1749" to "The Rev'd Mr Robert Gilbert at Sarum one of the Prebends of the Cathedral Church of Salsbury", signed only "your Friend and [humble] Serv'nt W:Y:". Robert Gilbert held the Prebend of Alton Australis from 1749 until 1753. "On Reading the publick Newes Papers understand you are the Gentleman that is insituted Prebend of Alton Austral therefore thought it might be of Service to you to informe you what a bad life the manner of Alton is held by tis one Mr John Stickland who now Lives at a Place caled Pimpern near Blandford he have been in A declining way Seven years have lived freely and is in the Sixty Eighth year of his age and tis thought he canot live OVer the Summer . . . ". "[I] advise you as a Friend that Land Markes in the filds are all plowed up". Gilbert is urged "to make A thorough inquirey other wise you will be keept in the dark".
