Description

Letter from Andrew Mortimer, Chapter Clerk, to Robert Pinkeney (Prebendary of Beminster Prima, 1572-1636) and a Thomas Jay or Jaye (unidentified) about the "money towards the King's entertainment" due by 1 May but as yet unpaid. Two notes are added below the letter: 1. A note by Andrew Mortimer telling Pinkeney and Jay that the "messenger . . . I am assured comes not from an infected house" and that "you may safely come to the Angell in the High Street for neither that nor any other in the whole town is infected"; an outbreak of plague in Salisbury in 1604 is recorded as having caused the death of a sixth of the population. 2. A note to Mortimer by "your friend" Thomas Jaye assuring him that "the money" and "my subsidy" will be paid.
