17th-century dark brown calf over paper boards; sewn on six supports; boards decorated with blind fillets forming rectangular frame towards perimeter of boards, with additional vertical blind fillets towards spine; spine with six raised bands, blind fillets, and later gilt fillets; leather spine label with "Spelman Vita Aelfredi"; "Oxon 1678" in gilt at tail of spine; gilt roll around board edges; text block edges sprinkled red; evidence of chain-plate at fore-edge of lower board.
