Description

Boards only of a book (now used as a folder for various items) with the title 'psalterium' on the spine along with the number 515. On the inside front cover Canon Quirk has written 'PALATER as translated by Brother Felix 1515' - this translation has not survived in this folder. Contains: (1) Front board only of an eighteenth century book with a letter dated pasted in. An inscription above the letter reads: 'A curious letter from the Rev. Daniel Neal, author of the History of the Puritans. Given me by the Rev. Samuel Lucas of Salop, Nov 1798'. The letter refers to: the opinions of his daughter on the unknown recipient of the letter 'I communicated the contents of your letter to my daughter who is of opinion that you have laid your colours very thick that noone can possibly mistake your compliments for naked truth'; Master Lester 'he is learning to read and pronounce English...I doubt not but in a little time he will have quite lost his North Country brogue'; Neal's health; a law suit [?] relating to Mr Coward of Sadless [?] Hall; a discussion with Mr Newnham about money 'for your students' etc. Dated London November 6th 1739. (2) A slip of paper recording on one side: Henry Cooper of Newton Tony aged 23, husband. Annie Quaile of the same place aged 20. William Quaile of [?] Farmer. Newton Tony. On the other side: William Heubest [?] of Bramshaw aged 21 blacksmith. Annie Starmer of the same aged 22 [?]. John Turker of Landford yeoman. Benficiaries. Both sides also contain some mathematical calculations. (3) Envelope only addressed to Miss Pepys 36 Bryanston Square. (4) Letter from H Stebbing to Mr Markn 'Register at Salisbury'. After remonstrating that the letter to him had been addressed incorrectly he writes 'As to the surrogate of Cricklade you may appoint Mr Fifield Minty, or whom [?] of my surrogate that is near the place. Signed 11 September 1745 at Garboldisham in Norfolk. (There is a monument to Stebbing in Salisbury Cathedral.) (5) Letter from William Rolfe addressed to Mr Froom, Sarum about his planned re admittance as churchwarden at Amesbury 'I am prevented by an apprehension of the small pox. Names Francis Cholfe and fellow churchwarden My Bundy. Undated. (6) Letter from H M Deane from Mr Theophilus Dyer, proctor at Sarum with typed transcript. Concerns paying costs for 'Broadbridge & his wife & so discharged the contempts so that we might appear to a Libel & bring the cause to a hearing'. Dated Reading 10th August 1702. Also noted is the address of Mr P Jones - The Rose & Crown, Winchester Street. (7) Letter from John Turner addressed to Mr Froome at Potterne. At the request of several creditors of Henry Webb of this town deceased and being a principal one myself I am to desire you please to enter a caveat against Edmund Duck and Sarah his wife administering to the effects of said Henry if there is any expense attending this the bearer will pay for it. Dated 10th April 1759 Devizes. (8) Note in pencil 'Thrown out by the Registry when moving'. This may refer to the Diocesan Registry which was once housed at 6 The Close. (9) A collection of seven parchment fragments possibly depict the coat of arms of William and Mary, dated 1693, 1694, 1696, 1697, one fragment from the time of William I dated 1702, and two fragments from the time of George I, one undated [1717] the other dated 1719.
