Description

Charter of Henry II, granting to the Cathedral the churches of Heytesbury, Godalming and about 30 others, and to the canons there the tithes of the New Forest and of all the King's forests in Wiltshire, Dorset and Berks, including the tithes of hunting except for the tithes of the hunting taken with a buckstall [a net for catching deer] in Windsor Forest. Also sufficient wood from the King's forest for maintaining and repairing the Cathedral. Also the prebend of "Rotefen", and a fair at Salisbury for three dates before the Feast of St Mary in September and for three days after and on the day of the feasts [8th September]. Also other lands, market privileges, churches etc specified. Witnesses: Theobald, Archbishop of Canterbury, Roger Archbishop of York, Hilary, Bishop of Chichester, Robert Bishop of Lincoln, Nigel Bishop of Ely, Thomas the Chancellor [Thomas Becket, Lord Chancellor to Henry II appointed Jan 1155, later Archbishop of Canterbury] , Robert Earl of Leicester, Patrick the Earl, Richard de Hum', Constables' Mannes' Biset steward, Warin son of Gerald the Chamberlain, Humphrey de Buh' steward, Engelg de Buh', Richard de Haia, Robert Bertin', William son of Ham', Robert de Dunstanu', John son of Ham'.
