Description

One of "Valentine's X.L. Series Real Photo Cards". "Halfpenny Postage" printed in the top right corner on the verso. The rate for post cards was increased to one penny in 1918. A view of George Gilbert Scott's presbytery, taken from just west of the altar rail, looking east, showing the marble reredos designed by Scott in 1873 and executed by Farmer and Brindley of London, the gift of Frederick Lygon, 6th Earl Beauchamp, in memory of Richard Beauchamp (d 1481), Bishop of Salisbury (1449-1481). Bishop Beauchamp's chantry chapel had been dismantled in 1790 in James Wyatt's reordering of the Cathedral. The image also shows the walnut and silver gasoliers desiigned by Sir Arthur Blomfield.
