The porch is believed to have been part of a cross originating from Old Sarum and adapted as a north porch for the new Salisbury Cathedral. About 500 years later the entrance to the Cathedral to which the porch was attached was blocked up and the porch was presented to H P Wyndham by the Dean and Chapter at which time a spire and other elements were added.
