Description
Mandate signed by William Douglas, Archdeacon of Wilts and Canon Residentiary as "commissary for this Purpose specially appointed by the Right Reverend Father in God John [Douglas] by Divine Permission Lord Bishop of Salisbury", for the installation of William Lisle Bowles as Prebendary of Stratford.
Endorsed on the verso:
"21 Jan 1804
Stratford Prebend
The Rev'd Wm L Bowles Clk A.M. installed"
Bowles (1762-1850) was granted the Prebend of Major Pars Altaris in 1805 and was made a Canon Residentiary in 1828. He was variously Rector of Chicklade and Vicar of Bremhill. He was appointed Chaplain to the Prince Regent in 1818.
As a poet, Bowles's sonnets published in 1789 were praised by Coleridge and Wordsworth; his later, longer poems were ridiculed by Byron. He published an edition of Pope's works. Some of his prose writings had the effect of establishing a basis for poetical criticism, in which he was supported by Hazlitt among others. He also had a reputation as a published antiquary.
