Description
A letter to John Piers (1522/23-1594), sometime Bishop of Salisbury (1577-1589), now Archbishop of York (1589-1594), from his Steward, E Stanhope.
The letter concerns a dispute about the ploughing of common land near Harworth in Nottinghamshire. One Wagstaffe, a freeholder, and a Mr Morton, a tenant, "earlie this yeare beganne to plowe . . . upon the common . . . of Harworthe belonging to your manor of Plumtree" on which the tenants of Scrooby ("Scrowbie") had rights "from tyme out of mynd". Scrooby was also a manor belonging to the Archbishops of York. The Steward asks how he is to proceed.
