Description

A folded card (110mm x 155mm) printed on the front with a colour image of the Salisbury diocesan arms. Printed on the back: "The Arms of the Episcopal See of Salisbury (C of E). From the Liber Amicorum by Bruno B Heim. Reproduced in Heraldry in the Catholic Church and in Armorial, published by Van Duren, England. Typewritten inside the card, and dated "23-3-91": "Dear Colonel Ross, Your request on behalf of the Right Reverend The Bishop of Salisbury to have permission to use the design of the diocesan arms as designed by Archbishop B B Heim, and depicted on this card, has been forwarded to me . . . I have pleasure in giving the requested permission. Yours sincerely, Dr Peter Bander-van Duren" The note is addressed to Lt Col C C G Ross at the Diocesan Office on Crane Street, Salisbury, from PO Box 1, Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire SL9 7AE. With a metal matrix of the said design of the diocesan arms, and a black and white imprint thereof, originally in an envelope labelled "Crest plates used for Bishop's book". Archbishop Bruno Bernard Heim (1911-2003) was Apostolic Delegate to Great Britain (1973-1982) and Apostolic Pro-Nuncio to Great Britain (1982-1985). He was one of the most prominent armorists of twentieth century ecclesiastical heraldry, publishing five books on heraldry and designing the coats of arms of four popes.
