Description
Confirmation by Robert de Bingham, Bishop of Salisbury, of an agreement between Sir William de Englefield and his brother Thomas, Rector of Englefield, about an exchange of land in Englefield. Given at Sonning, Berkshire on 14 Aug 1245 (xix Kal Septembr m cc quadragesima quinto) with the names of eight witnesses. Small charter hand on ruled vellum,17 lines, 116mm by 163mm. Slight staining. With the Bishops' seal.
"The seal . . . is, I believe, the only example extant to have the cartouche, with the three spires, still intact . . . I like to think that . . . when the seal was struck . . . three [spires] were intended . . . I put this to Pevsner once and he thought it possible."
