Description
Citation of the Dean (Thomas Greene) and Chapter addressed to forty-eight Prebendaries and other dignitaries, requiring them to appear on Wednesday 4 November 1761 in the Chapter House for the purpose of "treating of the Election of a New Bishop and with the Grace of God for the Electing a Bishop" following the translation to York of Robert Hay Drummond (1711-1776) who had been Bishop of Salisbury only from June until August 1761.
Folded within the document is an undated near-contemporary paper of uncertain provenance and purpose, bearing a list of names and appointments. These include William Dodwell, Canon Residentiary and Prebendary of Grantham Australis, who is listed as one of the addressees of the main document, and William Whitworth, Archdeacon of Sarum and Prebendary of Bishopstone, who was not appointed Prebendary until 1766, five years after the date of the main document.
