Description
Citation of Robert Gilbert, Canon Residentiary, Prebendary and President of the Council, addressed to the Dean (Thomas Greene) and forty-seven other Prebendaries and dignitaries, requiring them to appear on Tuesday 2 June 1761 in the Chapter House for the purpose of "treating of the Election of a New Bishop and with the Grace of God for the Electing a Bishop" following the translation to Winchester of JohnThomas (I) (1696-1781).
Folded within the Citation are two undated papers recording votes in favour of Robert Hay Drummond. One records three votes: of Robert Gilbert (Prebendary of Highworth and Canon Residentiary); of Sam Rolleston (Archdeaon); and of William Dodwell (Prebendary of Grantham Austral and Canon Residentiary). The second records two votes: of Newton Ogle (Prebendary of Gillingham Major and Canon Residentiary); and of James Stirling Samber (Subdean). In the list of addressees on the Citation itself, these five names have what looks like "Appd" ("Approved"?) written against them.
Also folded within the Citation is a document dated 2 Jun 1761 (the date of the election to which the Citation relates), addressed to George III from the Dean (Thomas Greene) and Chapter, in which they "humbly supplicate and beseech" the King "that Your Majesty will be most graciously pleased to Grant unto us Your Royal Licence for Our Electing and choosing a new Bishop". Parchment, with the seal of the Chapter on a wafer.
