Description
Congé d'Élire of George III for the appointment of a Bishop of Salisbury following the translation of John Thomas (I) to Winchester.
The document includes ornamented capitals, the large initial "G" of "George" incorporating a head and shoulders portrait of George III, the royal crest, and elaborate heraldic decoration and other flourishes. The seal is attached with intertwined gold and silver thread.
(There is also a petition dated three days after this Congé d'Élire, wherein the Dean and Chapter "humbly supplicate and beseech" the King "that Your Majesty will be most graciously pleased to Grant unto us Your Royal Licence for Our Electing and choosing a new Bishop" - i.e. they are asking for this document; see the Citation at BS/1/35/2 and the petition folded therein).
