Description

Letters Patent of George III addressed to "All and singular Knights ffreeholders and all other Tenants of the Bishoprick of Salisbury" and confirming the King's "Royal Assent and favour" to the election of John Hume. They confirm that the King has restored to the new Bishop "the Temporalities of the Bishoprick"; and they "command ye That to the said Elect as your Bishop and Lord in every thing as the said BIshoprick appertaining ye be obedient responsible aiding and assisting as it becomes ye". A large amd elaborate document, similar to a Congé d'Élire of the period, with ornamented capitals, the large initial "G" of "George" incorporating a head and shoulders portrait of George III, the royal crest, and elaborate heraldic decoration and other flourishes. The seal is attached with intertwined gold and silver thread.
