Description
Congé d'Élire of George III for the appointment of a Bishop of Salisbury following the death of John Thomas (II).
The document includes ornamented capitals, the large initial "G" of "George" incorporating a head and shoulders portrait of George III, the royal crest, and elaborate heraldic decoration and other flourishes.
The seal is attached with intertwined gold and silver thread. Wrapped around the seal and partly stuck to it are fragments of a near-contemporary newspaper which includes advertisements ("This day was published") for a book by John Foster (d. 1773, sometime headmaster of Eton), An Essay on the different Nature of Accent and Quantity, and for a print by William Hogarth (1697-1764), Credulity, Superstition and Fanaticism: A Medley, both of which were first published in 1762. There is also an announcement of an auction sale to take place on "Tuesday the 13th April"; 13 April was a Tuesday in 1762.
