Description
Charter concerning the stock which canons ought to leave for their prebends after their death, and concerning the dignitaries and their prebends. From Robert Dean and the Chapter. By the customs of Salisbury Cathedral, when prebendaries die they should leave stock to their successor. And for those prebends it is written down what and how much is owed, but for other prebends nothing is written. We make known to you all that the four dignitaries ('dignitates'), namely the Dean, Precentor, Chancellor and Treasurer, are immune from this, and do not have to leave any stock [to their successors]. Robert the Dean does not have to leave any stock for his prebend of Wodeford [Woodford], Roger the Precentor does not have to leave any stock for his prebend of Teyntune [Teynton] (both of these did not received anything when they took over), and master Ralph de Hecham the Chancellor does not need to leave any stock for the prebend annexed to his office. But concerning the prebend of Calne which is annexed to the office of Treasurer, the Treasurer must leave stock.
