Description
The majority of the contents are recorded front to back with further notes recorded back to front.
Front to back: contains notes primarily by Christopher Wordsworth but also by A R Malden. The first page records that the volume was 'The gift of Mr Russell Malden from his father's library 3 Nov 1913.' There is a handwritten, incomplete, contents list at the front of the volume. Included in the volume are notes on: ordines; ordinati; lists of Chapter Acts (primarily the chapter act books but also includes reference to acts of 1213-14 and 1222 in the Register of St Osmund and acts of 1320-1326 in Liber C); lists of bishops' registers; notes from 'Transactions of the Salisbury Field Club'; St Osmund's shrine; notes on a volume from the 'City of Salisbury Municipal Muniment Room' which contains a letter from William Laud to the Dean and Chapter on houses in the Cathedral churchyard which Laud orders them to demolish; [parliamentary] survey of the Close in 1649; newspaper cutting of a lecture by A R Malden on the history of Salisbury Cathedral; Richard Gough sepulchral monuments [with plan]; rings of Bishop Longspee and Bishop Beauchamp [sketches of which are noted to be in Richard Gough's own copy now deposited in the Bodleian library]; St Osmund's lands in Domesday Book; Adam Mottram's inscription on a buttress; communars' rolls; 'The Priest Vicars' Seats' [lay vicars/vicars choral]; notes [?] relating to an article [?] in Country Life 9 Aug 1913; pasted note re poem 'The Chancellor's [of Salisbury] Garden' by William John Courthope printed in 'The Country Town and Other Poems' 1920; details of vicars; Chapter Act book Hemingsby; Chapter Act Book Shuter; notes on Henry Lawes; paper by Wordsworth on a old Spanish biblical text referencing work by Rev E S Buchanan with two letters both commenting on American views of World War I [1916/1917].
Back to front: The first page has the following inscription 'Chr Wordsworth in memoriam A R Marden ex donis Russell Malden 3 Nov 1913'. Contains notes on: Salisbury municipal records (not in Wordsworth's hand); Standlynch; newspaper cuttings re 'The Ownership of Standlynch Church' 28 Nov 1913 and 'The Right to Close Churches' 28 Nov 1913; Downton; chancel screens in the Salisbury diocese (C E Ponting); status etc of the vicar of the close.
