Sarum Almanack and Diocesan Kalendar (Vestry Diaries),

Description

These editions, dating from 1865 to 19??, of the Sarum Almanack and Diocesan Kalendar (later known as the Sarum Diocesan Directory) were once used in the Vestry. Surviving issues from 1883 onwards include a diary in which the vergers recorded basic details of services and preachers as well as other occasional brief references of mostly notable events in the Cathedral although there are also entries on more prosaic subjects such as heating provided by the Cathedral's 'Gurney' stoves. The Cathedral library holds ?? editions of the Almanack although the diary sections of these have not been completed. A near complete set (1858-2013) forms part of the archives of the Salisbury Diocese, and are held at the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre. This annual publication generally includes the following types of information: index; short history of the diocese, lists of bishops and deans; dimensions of the cathedral; list of cathedral canons and other clergy; regular services; preaching turns; vestry prayers; days in the church year and tables of lessons arranged by month; additional psalms and lessons; times of sunrise and sunset; guide to services at churches throughout the diocese; important diocesan events; church committees (names of and individuals servicing on the committees); Diocesan Board of Finance and Constitution; special services during the preceding year; papers for deacon and priests orders; ordination of curates; list of individuals ordained and other appointments in the preceding two years; alterations to churches; section on education; foreign missions; names of recently deceased clergy; diocesan associations (including Diocesan Choral Association); educational foundations; women's diocesan work; church guilds; religious foundations; clerical libraries; missionary libraries; charitable institutions including hospitals and dispensary; reformatories; museums; special mission funds; list of rural deaneries and the parishes within them; alphabetical list of benefices; Salisbury Diocesan Synod - elected members; clerical members; parochial representatives; county magistrates; county officials; London bankers; banks in Wiltshire and Dorset; fairs and market days; advertisements.
